Choose the certification explicitly required or accepted for the role. If no credential is named, compare the schemes in this order:

Certification, Training and Course Completion Are Not the Same

Training develops knowledge and skills. Certification is a formal decision made under a defined scheme after the candidate satisfies the required combination of training, examination, experience, application and other conditions.

A certificate of course completion normally confirms that training was completed. It does not automatically prove that the holder has received the corresponding professional certification. AMPP, for example, states that completing a course produces a course-completion certificate, while candidates in a certification programme must also meet the programme’s certification requirements.

Costs are deliberately excluded. Course fees, examination charges, travel, tax, retakes and local delivery arrangements change too quickly for a durable comparison. Request a dated, itemized quotation from the official provider or approved training body.

AMPP CIP: Current Route and Legacy NACE/SSPC Names

AMPP’s current Coatings Inspector Program is the successor framework connected to the legacy NACE Coating Inspector Program and SSPC Protective Coatings Inspector programme. AMPP states that the current programme will take the place of NACE CIP and SSPC PCI references and that existing cardholders have been moved into the AMPP programme.

This naming transition matters when reading older project specifications or job advertisements. A document may still say “NACE CIP,” while a current candidate sees AMPP titles such as Basic Coatings Inspector, Certified Coatings Inspector and Senior Certified Coatings Inspector. Do not rewrite the project requirement yourself. Ask the employer or client to confirm which current credential satisfies the legacy wording.

AMPP CIP Level 1

The current AMPP page states that the CIP Level 1 course has no prerequisites. The certification route includes successful course completion, ethics training, a practical examination and a theory examination. The Basic Coatings Inspector certification is shown as valid for three years.

This makes Level 1 the clearest AMPP entry point for a candidate building a general coating-inspection foundation. However, “no course prerequisites” should not be expanded into a promise that every employer will accept a newly certified inspector for independent work. Job authority and supervision still depend on the employer, project and AMPP’s published role guidance.

AMPP CIP Level 2

AMPP currently requires completion of the Level 1 course, an active Basic Coatings Inspector certification, an approved application and two years of verifiable coatings-related work experience. The route includes practical and theory examinations, and the certification page states a three-year validity period.

Level 2 is therefore a progression route, not simply a more difficult course that can replace Level 1 and experience. Candidates should verify that their work records meet AMPP’s accepted-experience definitions before committing to dates and travel.

AMPP CIP Level 3

The Senior Certified Coatings Inspector route requires completed Level 1 and Level 2 courses, an active Level 2 credential, five years of coatings-related corrosion work experience and an approved application. The assessment is an oral peer-review examination. The credential page states a three-year validity period and identifies the current senior credential as equivalent to legacy NACE CIP Level 3 and SSPC PCI Level 3.

That equivalence is an AMPP legacy-program statement. It does not establish equivalence between AMPP Level 3 and FROSIO Level III, ICorr Level 3 or a BGAS-CSWIP grade.

AMPP renewal pages direct holders to maintain work-experience and professional-development records in the certification portal. Check the current renewal guide well before expiry rather than relying on the validity date alone.

FROSIO: One Approved Course, Experience-Based Levels

FROSIO’s surface-treatment inspector route combines an 80-hour course delivered by an approved training body, theoretical and practical examinations, and documented experience. The candidate’s experience determines the level awarded.

  • Level I — White: for candidates with no relevant experience or less than the requirement for Level II.
  • Level II — Green: requires at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Level III — Red: requires at least five years of relevant experience, including a minimum of two years of documented inspection experience.

FROSIO states that each level is valid for five years from the first issue date. Its definition of relevant surface-treatment experience includes work connected to metallic-surface pretreatment, application of paint or other corrosion-prevention coatings, and inspection of that work. The official page lists sectors such as shipbuilding, marine and offshore installations, energy, transport infrastructure and industrial plants as possible experience contexts.

The route can be useful to a new entrant because passing the same training and examinations does not require the candidate to pretend to have experience they do not yet hold. A candidate with insufficient experience may receive Level I and later seek an upgrade after meeting the applicable evidence requirements.

Renewal is evidence-based. FROSIO asks for recent experience records, an updated CV and employer confirmation. Its current renewal page adds a specific recent inspection-practice requirement for Level III renewal. FROSIO also warns that a certificate not renewed within six months after expiry becomes invalid and a new examination is required.

Norwegian Accreditation currently lists FROSIO’s personnel-certification body as meeting NS-EN ISO/IEC 17024:2012 requirements for the stated surface-treatment and insulation schemes, with the displayed accreditation valid to 3 March 2028. Accreditation status should still be checked at the time of enrolment and again before a tender relies on it.

ICorr: A Progressive Protective-Coatings Route

The Institute of Corrosion lists Protective Coatings Inspector Levels 1, 2 and 3, online alternatives and specialist routes such as Pipeline Coatings Inspector and passive-fire-protection coating inspection. This makes it important to identify the exact ICorr qualification—not merely write “ICorr certified” on a comparison list.

Current ICorr information shows a progressive experience model. Its online Level 1 route states a coating/painting industry experience requirement. The classroom Level 2 page requires Level 1 certification and two years as an inspector. The online Level 3 page requires an ICorr Level 2 certificate and 36 months of coating-inspection experience after Level 2.

The current Level 3 route describes an advanced role that interprets and evaluates inspection or test results, selects methods and guides lower-level personnel. ICorr’s published requirements also prevent candidates from treating Level 3 as a direct-entry option.

Current level pages describe the qualifications as valid for five years, with recertification routes available. Before applying, confirm:

  • whether you are using the classroom or online route;
  • whether the experience must have been gained after the previous level;
  • which training partner and examination arrangement apply;
  • whether the target employer accepts the general protective-coatings route or expects a specialist ICorr qualification;
  • which current requirements document controls the application.

This verification is necessary because course pages, partner delivery and route names can differ. Use the official ICorr requirements document and obtain written confirmation where a page title or URL is unclear.

BGAS-CSWIP: Painting and Pipeline-Oriented Routes

BGAS-CSWIP describes its certifications as particularly relevant to transmission-pipeline personnel and lists painting, coating and pipeline inspection roles within the wider scheme. The route should therefore be investigated when the target work is pipeline-oriented or when a job specification names BGAS-CSWIP.

The current TWI Training page for Painting Inspector Grade 2 states that the required six months of industrial experience may be gained before or after the examination. The experience should demonstrate knowledge of dry abrasive blast cleaning or industrial paint-application techniques. If experience is gained after the exam, the result remains valid for two years, and certification is not issued until proof of experience is accepted.

For Painting Inspector Grade 1, the current TWI page requires a valid Grade 2 certificate and at least 12 months of industrial experience, with evidence of knowledge of offshore working, safety and painting inspection. The pages also identify vision and colour-perception evidence among the application requirements.

BGAS-CSWIP also lists a Site Coatings Inspector route. A painting-inspector grade and a site-coatings approval should not be treated as interchangeable labels. Compare the scope in the current scheme document with the duties in the job description.

CURRENT STATUS — REVIEWED 27 JULY 2026: TWI Certification Ltd announced on 10 July 2026 that its ISO/IEC 17024 UKAS accreditation had been temporarily suspended. The notice states that TWI Certification Ltd cannot issue UKAS-accredited certificates while the suspension remains, certification decisions are on hold, and existing CSWIP certifications remain valid for their scheme validity period. It also states that training and examinations continue. Candidates should check the latest official notice before booking, sitting an examination or relying on a certificate-issue date.

 

The BGAS-CSWIP scheme page currently labels its scheme document “3rd Edition — July 2026.” During this review, the downloadable document available through the page did not provide a sufficiently reliable basis for reproducing every current grade rule. This article therefore uses the current official scheme and TWI route pages for orientation but recommends written confirmation of the controlling revision before payment.

CSWIP’s renewal page describes five-year renewal and ten-year recertification processes and asks for verified work-activity evidence and continuing professional development. Check the certificate-specific form and any current accreditation notice together.

Why Levels and Grades Do Not Map One-to-One

“Level 2” in one scheme is not automatically equal to “Level II” or “Grade 2” in another. Similar labels can hide different entry conditions, examination formats, experience timing, role authority, renewal evidence and technical scope.

For example:

  • FROSIO uses experience to determine which level is awarded after its approved course and examinations.
  • AMPP Level 2 requires an active prior AMPP credential, verified experience and further assessment.

If a vacancy says “AMPP CIP Level 2 or equivalent,” ask the employer which alternatives it accepts and who approves the equivalence. If a tender says “FROSIO Level III,” do not assume a different Level 3 will be accepted because the seniority sounds similar.

The same rule applies to offshore and pipeline work. A provider’s course description may mention those sectors, but a project can still specify another credential, additional safety training, client approval or supervised experience.

The matrix does not produce one global winner. It identifies the route with the fewest unresolved barriers for a defined career target.

For example, if a pipeline contractor explicitly requires BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Grade 2, the recognition question is mostly answered, but eligibility and current certificate-issue timing still need confirmation. If a marine fabricator accepts either FROSIO Level II or AMPP Certified Coatings Inspector, compare your documented experience, location, examination route and renewal responsibilities.

You have no coating-industry experience

Do not begin by selecting the highest level you hope to hold. Identify routes that allow entry-level training or a candidate-level outcome, then build documented work experience.

AMPP Level 1 has no course prerequisite. FROSIO may award Level I after the approved course and examinations when higher-level experience is absent. Other routes can have industry-experience conditions even at their first published level. Confirm the distinction between taking the course and receiving the credential.

You have one to two years of relevant work

Create an experience record before applying. Include employer, dates, coating activities, substrates, inspection duties, supervisor or verifier and project type. Send the evidence to the certification body or approved provider for a written eligibility check.

The phrase “two years’ experience” can mean different things: two years in the coating industry, two years as an inspector, two years after the previous credential or a defined amount of verified work. Do not treat them as interchangeable.

You are an experienced inspector seeking senior responsibility

Check progression and role authority, not just the senior label. AMPP Level 3 uses a peer-review oral exam and requires an active Level 2 credential plus experience. FROSIO Level III requires five years’ relevant experience including two years of inspection experience. ICorr Level 3 requires Level 2 plus further post-Level-2 experience.

Then confirm whether the target employer uses the senior credential to authorize supervision, technical review or project-specific approval. Certification does not automatically override the employer’s responsibility matrix.

You are targeting offshore work

Search actual employer and client requirements. FROSIO’s relevant-experience examples include marine and offshore installations; ICorr offers marine/offshore-oriented content; TWI positions BGAS Painting Inspector Grade 1 with offshore knowledge; AMPP covers multiple asset types and offers specialties. None of those descriptions alone proves acceptance for a particular offshore operator.

You are targeting pipeline or site-coatings work

BGAS-CSWIP has explicit transmission-pipeline relevance and distinct coating roles. ICorr lists a Pipeline Coatings Inspector route, and AMPP lists a Pipeline Coating Inspection specialty. Compare the exact scheme scope with the job’s activities—factory-applied coating, field-joint coating, site painting, inspection surveillance or pipeline integrity support may lead to different requirements.

The employer names one credential

Treat that wording as the primary filter. Ask whether a current title replaces a legacy name and whether alternatives are accepted. Get the answer in writing where the decision affects hiring, mobilization or tender compliance.
